Manchester United have had some top players over the years and our local Red Devils fans in the Transfer Tavern love reminiscing over some of their past heroes.
From Eric Cantona to Cristiano Ronaldo, some of the imports into the Old Trafford club have been huge in the team’s success and the feeling now is one of hope surrounding the new signings.
After a few seasons in the wilderness the club have signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan – with the United faithful hoping they can help write a new successful chapter in the history of the club.
Time will tell with those of course but those three aren’t the only players that have signed recently with big things expected of them.
Over the last five years United have signed some key players to improve them as a team, and our landlord thinks this THREE are the best to have walked through the Old Trafford doors in the last half a decade…
Robin Van Persie
United signed the Dutchman from Arsenal with one goal in mind – winning the title back from Manchester City in the 2012/13 season.
He’d been flying the year before for the Gunners and naturally carried that form on for the Red Devils, duly delivering on the task Sir Alex Ferguson set him.
United blew everyone away that season as Sir Alex bowed out at the end of the year with Van Persie his last great capture.
David De Gea
De Gea signed in 2011 and at first appeared a little shaky.
He looked quite lightweight in goal for United and flapped at aerial balls but now the change is remarkable.
He’s one of the best shot-stoppers in the game and has saved United innumerable times over the last few years.
Now, in a resurgent Old Trafford outfit, he could be about to be the best in the business – some in the Transfer Tavern think he already is.
Luke Shaw
Luke Shaw signed as a promising left-back from Southampton and has gradually grown into the role to become one of their key assets.
The Englishman flies up and down the left side seemingly on Duracell batteries and looks as though he’ll only get better.
The best thing about him is his mentality though, after a nasty leg break last season he has instantly bounced back.
