These 3 reasons are why David Luiz was an incredibly silly signing – Agreed?

The Chelsea fans here in the Transfer Tavern are a bit unsure as to how their season is going to go this year.

After initial optimism from going the first four games unbeaten the Blues came to a shuddering halt, with Liverpool and then Arsenal not just beating them but outplaying them for the whole game.

It was a worrying turn of events for the Stamford Bridge faithful who, despite last weekend’s 2-0 win over Hull, are still concerned about the possibility of another season like last year.

Antonio Conte will be doing everything he can to ensure that does not happen but he can only do so much and then it is up to the players to perform.

David Luiz is one such player who, though not in the team last year, has a lot to prove in the Premier League.

Our landlord reckons he never will though and thinks re-signing him was ridiculous, here are THREE reasons why…

Not that good

Luiz

Shipping goals against Liverpool and Arsenal isn’t the ideal start and despite Luiz not being directly at fault you can’t deny Chelsea look weaker at the back with him in it.

He’s good at playing the ball out from the back, that has to be said, but in terms of actual defensive positioning, awareness and anticipation, he still leaves a lot to be desired.

Cost

Luiz

Chelsea fans may argue that the fee PSG paid out for him in the first place to sign him from Chelsea meant that their bid for him was more justified, but the fact is they still overpaid.

For the kind of money the Blues spent, they could have had a whole host of better defenders with potential to improve over Luiz but instead they left it late and went for the Brazilian.

Age

Luiz

With John Terry in the last few seasons of his career Chelsea needed to plan ahead and sign some young centre-backs but they just didn’t.

They have Kurt Zouma but him aside not much and with Luiz at 29 he doesn’t offer the chance to improve much or give a decent sell-on value.

The deal just looks more and more a panic buy the deeper you delve.
