After enjoying a promising opening to the campaign which evoked strong feelings of optimism at Goodison Park, a familiar feeling of disappointment has gripped the club this week following their 3-1 defeat against West Ham United.
Marco Silva’s arrival seemed to inject a level of creative freedom into the Toffees play which had been glaringly absent last season, but the results have not quite matched the early season promise so far.
Converting positive performances into three points has proven problematic with only 1 win to show from Everton’s opening 5 fixtures.
But Silva’s side failed to produce anything remotely resembling a positive performance on Sunday afternoon as they were well beaten by a clinical West Ham side on Merseyside.
In the aftermath of proceedings the Everton supporters were highly critical of plenty of individuals, but one man who came in for particularly strong criticism was academy product Jonjoe Kenny.
Seamus Coleman started the first 4 games of the season at right-back but he was sidelined on Sunday after picking up a foot injury on international duty.
Coleman’s absence handed a first start of the season to Everton’s obvious replacement in Kenny, and he made a decisive impact in the final-third by providing a perfectly weighted cross for Gylfi Sigurdsson’s equalising goal.
However, some of his defending has been deemed questionable at best by Everton fans on Twitter and they have not held back in their assessment of his performance.
