Our Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are loving the fact manager Jose Mourinho is proving people wrong with his choice of going with youth in important matches.

In keeping with United’s 80-year record of having at least one youth academy product in the matchday squad, Mourinho has done what many of our regulars thought he wouldn’t and keep the tradition going and release some real gems into his first-team squad.

Still, the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and now Scott McTominay are really flourishing under the Portuguese’s tenure. Indeed, with the conveyor belt showing no signs of stopping our landlord believes there will surely be plenty more to choose from over the coming years and decades.

McTominany is the most recent youth graduate to start to make a name for himself and, in Paul Pogba’s absence, has taken his chance with both hands. Looking very comfortable in the recent matches he’s played, he certainly looks a prospect.

Mourinho has dipped his hand into United youth academy a few times this season and plucked out a couple of belters according to our bar stalwarts but which two should be next in line to break into the first team, we take a look…

Axel Tuanzebe

The Democratic Republic of Congo defender has been making waves in the youth set-up since joining as an eight-year-old. Indeed, the 17-year-old has been touted as a Rio Ferdinand type defender by our drinkers and, when Mourinho has let him loose in the first team, he’s looked as classy and composed as the ex-United captain.

Tuanzebe has also been touted as a potential leader and could very well follow Ferdinand’s path, looking impressive during his Premier League debut earlier this year, despite the loss to Arsenal.

Atletic and assured, the talented teen really does have the tools to make it.

Angel Gomes

The 16-year-old has just lifted the u17 World Cup with England after captaining the side, Nicky Butt speaks very highly of the attacking midfielder and there are great hopes for the United teenager, who’s been at the club since he was six.

A player who can play in the number 10 role got to showcase his skill in the final match of last season and being the youngest player to appear for United since Duncan Edwards.

A huge talent already linked with Barcelona, there’s always room for entertainers at Old Trafford.
