Liverpool have a pretty decent team at the moment and our resident Reds fans here in the Transfer Tavern are pretty happy with how things are going this season.
With just one loss to their name so far they sit in the top four just two points off of the top of table and look like a team ready to give anyone a game.
Jurgen Klopp must be credited for assembling a side that knows exactly how he wants them to play football, pressing at the right moments and scoring a good amount of goals.
If they can continue in this manner many feel they’ll have a real chance of winning the title this season but they haven’t always had the best players to do so.
In truth, Liverpool have made some shocking signings over the years and our landlord reckons this eleven are the worst of the last decade. In all seriousness though, there could have been two line-ups…
Charles Itandje
Itandje was signed with the idea he was set to become a world-class ‘keeper for club and country.
He really didn’t though and soon embarked on a mediocre career.
Josemi
Liverpool have had some okay right backs in this period but Josemi was not one of them.
The Spaniard never got up to speed in the Premier League and was one of Rafa Benitez’s Spanish contingent that flopped.
They can’t all be Xabi Alonso we suppose.
Mauricio Pellegrino
Pellegrino was signed under Benitez as a player with good European experience but he simply couldn’t adapt to Premier League life. He spent a short spell playing at the club and wound up coaching there too where he was arguably a bit more successful. Wasn’t hard though.
Djimi Traore
The man known for not being able to control his feet it’s simply baffling that he has a Champions League medal at home.
The Frenchman is probably best remembered for his own goal against Burnley in the FA Cup as he neatly pirouetted and caressed the ball past his own ‘keeper.
Paul Konchesky
This signing pretty much summed up Roy Hodgson’s short Liverpool career.
The full-back was never going to be good enough to play at the level Liverpool wanted to and he got found out a number of times in his short stay on Merseyside.
Christian Poulsen
Another odd Hodgson signing. The former Juventus man had the clubs and experience on his CV to suggest he’d be a decent holding player for the Reds but he simply wasn’t.
He never got to grips with the physicality of the Premier League and the fans’ patience quickly grew thin with him.
Alberto Aquilani
The Italian was signed as a replacement for Xabi Alonso by Rafa Benitez and thus began the Reds’ spiral away from the top four. Plagued by injuries and a lack of confidence Aquilani didn’t leave much of an impression during his stay on Merseyside and quickly found himself back in Italy where he felt more at home.
Milan Jovanovic
There’s one memory Liverpool fans will have of Jovanovic and it’s not a good one. On his home debut against Arsenal he went to clear the ball with a diving header and completely missed it, leaving him prone on the grass looking a right clown. Things did not get better.
Andriy Voronin
Voronin was meant to be a decent back-up for Fernando Torres but he was anything but.
He missed chance after chance and very rarely had an impact on the game leaving the Anfield crowd wondering if they’d done something wrong to deserve seeing him perform for their side.
Iago Aspas
Too lightweight for the Premier League. Aspas has done okay in La Liga since moving back from Liverpool but in this country he simply couldn’t adapt.
He showed flashes of what he could in a cup game against Oldham but that was never going to be enough and he was duly let go.
David N’Gog
Another player meant to be Torres’ understudy things didn’t work out for N’Gog.
Aside from scoring a memorable goal against Manchester United he doesn’t have much to look back on with fondness during his time at Anfield, and never really looked like reaching the potential expected of him.
