Everton fans are in buoyant mood after the Toffees announced their sixth signing of the window, Wayne Rooney, has returned to the club.

The local boy, who rose through the Everton academy before bursting on the scene with a wonder goal against Arsenal has returned 13 years after leaving for Manchester United.

Rooney has signed a two-year deal with Ronald Koeman’s side as they aim to breach the top six this season.

Everton’s defensive record massively improved last season after a dismal 2015/16 campaign. Despite selling John Stones to Manchester City, Koeman’s side conceded 44 times in the Premier League, 13 less than the previous season.

The additions of Jordan Pickford and Michael Keane are likely to make for a sturdier backline, but who else should the Toffees buy to ensure for a successful season.

Kieran Gibbs

The Arsenal man has failed to cement himself as a regular in the Arsenal side since emerging from the academy in 2007.

Gibbs has one year to run on his current deal at The Emirates, with Arsenal expected to allow him to leave should he find a club.

Everton could use the Englishman as healthy competition for Leighton Baines, who has suffered with injuries of late.

Virgil Van Dijk

The addition of the 26 year-old would be a huge statement of intent from the Toffees.

Van Dijk has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool, while Manchester United and Arsenal are also said to have one eye on the Dutchman.

With the Saints unwilling to sell their star, Everton would have to cough up a substantial amount.

Cedric Soares

Another Southampton defender who has impressed, Cedric Soares has been tipped for a move to Barcelona this summer.

The Spaniard excelled at right-back for the Saints last season and could be available for £15m. The Sun report that Juventus are also keen on the 25 year-old.
