Liverpool more or less booked their place in the Champions League final this week with a stunning display of attacking football at Anfield, smashing five past a hapless Roma side to run out 5-2 winners.

The two late goals from Roma put a dent in an otherwise perfect showing from the Reds, and once again, it highlighted some of the defensive frailties which have at times threatened to derail Liverpool’s entire season.

Our landlord was pleased to see manager Jurgen Klopp bring in powerhouse defender Virgil Van Dijk, who has proved to be an excellent signing, but he still feels the club could do with adding one more world class central defender to the ranks to ensure they continue to challenge.

There are plenty of top class defenders in and around Europe and beyond, and we in the Tavern think Liverpool have the drawing power to be able to attract at least one of these players.

With that in mind, we’ve taken a look at the player we think the Reds need to make a move for his summer to shore up their backline.

Harry Maguire

The England and Leicester defender has done nothing but improve over the last few seasons, and looks to be heading to the very top, with a move this summer very much something of a possibility.

Maguire has excelled with the Foxes since making his move to the club from Sheffield United a few seasons back, and with more game time and experience, he has grown into one of the most dependable central defenders in the top flight.

Already staking his claim to be a regular for England, Maguire would complement Van Dijk perfectly, and give Liverpool a platform for success for years to come.
