The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have spent their weekends rueing yet another missed opportunity for their team.

If Chelsea were able to beat West Ham, then the Blues could yet have had a slight opening back into the race for the top four. However, it wasn’t to be, with yet another poor defensive display from Antonio Conte’s men costing them three points.

Far too often this season, it has been easy to point fingers at individual defenders, with nearly every player making a mistake at one point or another.

One of the worst offenders has been Gary Cahill. The Englishman has been a regular under Antonio Conte, with 19 league starts, despite his poor form over the last year, and he’s clearly one of the Italian’s go-to men when he needs a result.

However, Cahill is no longer that reliable hand that he once was, and whilst it may pain the Blues to sell him, our landlord thinks that it might be time.

With that said, here are TWO reason why it’s time for Gary Cahill to be sold…

 Too Many Mistakes

Gary Cahill used to be known for his consistency and composure, and that made him one of the Premier League’s best defenders.

However, over the last year or two, that has completely gone out of his game.

Seemingly on a weekly basis, the Englishman commits mistakes and errors that, more often than not, lead to his opponents getting an opening at goal.

At the top of the game, minor details make the biggest differences, and unfortunately for Cahill, he’s just not at that top-tier level anymore.

 Fresh Talent

Gary Cahill has been a fantastic servant for Chelsea, but perhaps it’s time for him to pass the torch. He isn’t like John Terry – in that he’s been able to maintain his performance level with age – he’s only getting worse, and so if he doesn’t move on quickly, it’s only going to end poorly both for him and for Chelsea.

Fortunately, the players around him are young. Cesar Azpilicueta is in his prime, Antonio Rudiger is improving every week, and both Andreas Christensen and even Kurt Zouma have the potential to become Chelsea greats.

It’s time for Cahill to move on, and for Chelsea to trade him in for a newer model.
