Tottenham: Clement Lenglet backed to start against Arsenal

Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, Seville, Spain - November 1, 2017, Sevilla’s Clement Lenglet celebrates scoring.

Tottenham may be forced into starting Clement Lenglet against Arsenal in their huge upcoming Premier League clash.

The Lowdown: Massive game at the Emirates

Once the current international break is done and dusted, Spurs have a massive north London derby clash with the Gunners to look forward to in Saturday’s early kick-off.

Antonio Conte’s side are one point behind their rivals going into the game, and while they have impressed this season, they have had to make do without Davies recently.

The 29-year-old has been limited to five league starts because of a hairline fracture in his knee suffered earlier this month.

It has kept him out of international duty with Wales and ‘sounds pretty bad‘, but is not expected to keep him sidelined for a lengthy period.

The Latest: Lenglet backed to start

In an interview with The Transfer Tavern, journalist Pete O’Rourke says he expects Lenglet to be ‘chucked in the deep end’ against the Gunners:

“Ben Davies has played some big games for club and country as well. Lenglet is still adapting to his new surroundings, he might have to be chucked in the deep end against Arsenal.”

The Verdict: Back Lenglet to perform

Although we’ve barely seen Lenglet in a Spurs shirt, he made 160 appearances for Barcelona and played in his fair share of El Clasicos, so he should be trusted to rise to the occasion.

As is the case with any player, using Davies when he isn’t fully fit would be a big risk, especially in a game as ferocious and fast-paced as the north London derby, so Conte will surely take the gamble on Lenglet instead.

Will Kane finish his career at Spurs?

Against an Arsenal attack playing with exuberance and confidence, Lenglet – with his two clearances per game and a 90.7% pass completion rate in the Premier League this season – should have the composure to fill the Davies void.
