Spurs fans in the Tavern were ecstatic yesterday when the Spurs U19s beat Monaco 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw to advance to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Youth League at Broadhall Way. Brandon Austin and Keanan Bennetts were heroes for the Lilywhites with Bennetts equalising early in the second half before Austin’s penalty shootout heroics.
John McDermott’s young Spurs side have set up an interesting fixture against Porto in the quarter-finals after the Portuguese side edged out RB Salzburg in their round of sixteen match. Spurs will be hoping they can continue their run in the competition and advance past Porto and into the semi-finals where they could meet either Manchester City or Liverpool who play each other in their quarterfinal match.
Fans of the North London team have called for some of the heroic U19s to be called up to the first team after putting in encouraging performances in the UEFA Youth League this season, in particular, Brandon Austin. The 19-year-old who has represented USA at U18 level received most of the plaudits for what was an inspired performance as he pulled off multiple impressive saves.
Considering Tottenham’s recent success with young talent, their win was always likely to spark a reaction online. With that in mind, here’s a closer look at it.
