Speaking recently in an interview on talkSPORT, former Arsenal winger Perry Groves claimed he didn’t believe that Tottenham Hotspur were ever ‘genuine title challengers’ following their loss to Leicester City.
After an incredibly impressive start to their 2020/21 Premier League campaign, which saw Jose Mourinho’s side win seven, draw four and lose just one of their opening 12 league fixtures, Spurs have now suffered back to back top-flight defeats in their last two fixtures, being narrowly beaten by Liverpool 2-1 on Wednesday before being rather less-narrowly beaten by Leicester City on Sunday, and those results came on the back of a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.
These results have seen Spurs fall from the top of the table down to out of the top four in just a matter of days, and, speaking talkSPORT, Groves stated his belief that Tottenham were never likely winners of the Premier League title.
He said: “Tottenham have been brilliant on the counter-attack and Son and Kane have been so clinical, they’ve been taking two chances out of three or four.
“But you can’t keep putting your forwards under that much pressure, that can’t keep going on. You have to give them more ammunition and be more creative and be more on the front foot.
“Tottenham, realistically, I think they’re still battling for top-four. They could be in the top-four, no problem, but I never saw them as genuine title challengers.”
Do you honestly believe that Tottenham can win the league?

While Tottenham have indeed fallen out of the top four due to their recent defeats, they remain only six points behind the league leaders, and they have still only been beaten by the likes of Everton, Leicester City and Liverpool this season, teams who currently sit above them in the league table.
So, while Groves may not consider Spurs to be genuine title challengers this season, while they are so close to the summit of the table, particularly with Christmas just around the corner, perhaps the pundit’s prediction may have something to his previous loyalty to Arsenal, rather than any real informed decision regarding Tottenham’s recent form.
