The Lowdown: Spurs may start looking for Conte’s successor
Spurs could well be on the hunt for a new manager in the not-so-distant future given reports about Antonio Conte looking set to leave the club in the summer, but also because of his passionate rant on the weekend.
Conte appeared to explode post-match on Saturday after watching his side surrender a two-goal lead against the worst team in the division in Southampton which saw him claim his players had no character.
A lot of talk has been about who could replace Conte either now or in the summer with the likes of Mauricio Pochettino – a firm fan favourite – and also Champions League winner Tuchel tipped as candidates.
The Latest: Tuchel won’t be managing Tottenham
Lewis was speaking on Sky Sports about the future of Conte and who his successor could be when he categorically denied the possibility of Tuchel managing at Spurs under Levy.
He said: (4:50) “There’ll be lots of people out there saying get him out I want someone else, but who are you going to get? This whole talk about Tuchel is fantasy.”
The Verdict: Levy can’t afford to make another poor decision
The fact that Conte has come out and spoken about how there have been several different managers at Tottenham in recent years and none of them have been able to bring about meaningful success in terms of trophies could well put off some top-class coaches.
This may well be where Lewis is coming from in terms of ruling out Tuchel as Conte’s successor because the German manager is a proven winner in both England and on the continent so he would have no eagerness to join Spurs, who are far from a club built on success.
Spurs have indeed not won anything since they lifted the league cup back in 2008 and that daunting static may well be weighing heavy on everyone connected to the club and could even soon see them struggle to attract the top coaches around the world.
