Speaking to Football Insider, Sky pundit Alex McLeish has suggested that there has been a ‘lot of talking’ between Spurs boss Jose Mourinho and ace Dele Alli over the midfielder’s slump in form – going on to say that he could be ‘grooming’ the player.
Alli, who was hauled off at half time during Spurs’ dismal 1-0 defeat to Royal Antwerp in mid-week, going on to take plenty of criticism from both the media and supporters, was given the chance to impress Mourinho with a starting place in that game.
Despite some flashes few and far between, Alli was sacrificed during the interval as his manager made a half time overhaul in an effort to put Spurs in control.
McLeish drops Alli claim
The Lilywhites ended up losing in Belgium, a shock result given the strength of Mourinho’s line up, and Alli has been one of the players facing backlash for the performance.
McLeish, in an interview with Football Insider, has hinted that Spurs could be ‘grooming’ Alli in an effort to nurture the return of his best form.
“Mourinho may have said: ‘Look, let’s keep things quiet a wee bit and get you back to your form’,” explained the former Scotland boss.
“You know, young boys, sometimes it goes really great for you as a youngster but then you lose form and you just don’t know how to get it back.
“When I saw Dele Alli a couple of years ago at Wembley, he scored a magnificent goal from 25 yards, I think it might have been France in a friendly and I thought this guy is destined for global fame.
“He just seems to have lost that wee knack that he had for getting in the box, running off the ball, he’s got good ball skills. Can he get it back? Maybe Jose is grooming him to get it back.”
Transfer Tavern take
Given the fact he has been ‘excellent in training’ recently according to ex-Spurs midfielder Michael Brown, McLeish’s theory may well be right, contrary to recent reports that he could be facing a January exit.
Whether or not this hint comes to fruition remains to be seen, but Spurs fans will surely be hoping they can see the best of Alli again.
