Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed that Serge Aurier will be replaced at Tottenham Hotspur in the long-term after being left out of the squad versus Brighton.
Speaking to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and England international striker is not surprised that the former Paris Saint Germain man found himself fallen out of favour and ultimately claimed that he will be replaced in the longer term by Jose Mourinho:
“That’s been happening for ages. In the Spurs documentary he says to him ‘I don’t like you on set pieces, you’re going to make a mistake’.
“Every time Aurier plays he seems to switch off. Whatever was said at half-time was deserved because I thought he was dreadful in his defending against Liverpool.
“If he’s not taken that well I don’t blame Jose Mourinho for leaving him out.
“I’m sure Jose Mourinho will be looking for a long-term replacement for Aurier.”
Aurier was ‘dreadful’ against Liverpool
As Agbonlahor rightfully points out, Aurier was nothing short of ‘dreadful’ in his defending against Jurgen Klopp’s men when Spurs lost 3-1 at home last week.
The Ivory Coast international failed to make a single interception or tackle in the game, while he also lost possession of the ball five times before being substituted at the start of the second half for Harry Winks (Sofascore).
Should Spurs sell Aurier?
He has also shown himself to be relatively error-prone as well as Agbonlahor suggests, making no fewer than three errors that have led directly to shots so far in the Premier League in the 2020/21 term.
The 28-year-old also ranks as the third-highest in the North London club’s squad in terms of fouls committed per match (1.5), showing that he can be very clumsy at times when he is defending.
Nonetheless, it may well be time for the Lilywhites to try and find themselves a replacement at right-back in the summer transfer window.
