Jose Mourinho has dropped an injury update on Giovani Lo Celso ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s home game versus Chelsea in the Premier League, and it’s not good news for Lilywhites fans.
Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match against Thomas Tuchel’s team, Mourinho said that Lo Celso will be out injured for ‘probably one more month’. Considering he was expected to be back ‘very soon‘ just a few weeks ago, this is no doubt a worrying blow for both the player and Spurs.
Should Lo Celso start for Spurs?
Lo Celso was thriving before his injury
Lo Celso was performing at a very good standard for the Lilywhites before his injury, with Mourinho even saying himself that he ‘can be an amazing player’ after he scored in a 3-1 away win over Ludogorets in the UEFA Europa League back in November.
It is perhaps not a coincidence that the North London club have only won two of their last six games in the Premier League, having lost their last two, all with Lo Celso absent from the side (Transfermarkt).
The Argentina international ranks joint-third among his teammates for average key passes per appearance so far in the 2020/21 term (0.8), only behind superstars Son Heung-Min (1.8) and Harry Kane (1.5) (Whoscored). Considering the amount of pressure on the star duo to perform, losing the next-best playmaker behind them for such a long period has been a huge blow.
He certainly offers THFC that extra little bit of creativity in midfield, which could have been vital in unlocking the door against Chelsea and thus getting a crucial three points to put them back on track in the top-flight table.
