Tottenham Hotspur: Steven Bergwijn suffering from groin injury after ‘worrying’ fitness update

According to a report by Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, via Sport Witness, the reason for Steven Bergwijn’s absence from international duty is a groin injury – with pundit Paul Robinson claiming ‘it is worrying‘ that he could have real fitness issues.

Bergwijn groin trouble

Bergwijn, who hasn’t been a regular starter for Jose Mourinho this season, with superstar signing Gareth Bale now being picked over him in the wide right position, looks set to miss the entire international break after being sent home by the Netherlands.

Signed by Spurs in January, manager Mourinho admitted that he wasn’t his first choice, and the star with ‘real quality‘ hasn’t exactly been a mainstay in the manager’s starting eleven since he put pen to paper.

This could have contributed to by Bergwijn’s fitness issues recently, and now De Telegraaf have reported that the attacker’s latest trouble is with groin complaints.

Transfer Tavern take

Robinson, speaking to Football Insider about Bergwijn being sent home, claimed that his fitness issues could be ‘worrying’ for Spurs and it is a ‘surprise’ that he has been sent home from international duty.

Despite being lauded as a top acquisition at the beginning of the year, Bergwijn could face a struggle to really make his mark under Mourinho with the return of Bale combined with his own fitness issues.

Costing Daniel Levy a hefty £27 million fee and still just 23-years-old, Bergwijn could yet justify that price tag in future – but as per this latest update, Tottenham may have to wait until he is at 100 per cent capacity.
