Sky Sports pundit Izzy Christiansen has slammed Cristian Romero for his ‘erratic’ performances in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt.

The Lowdown: Spurs in a mess

Spurs were certainly put to the sword last night by the Premier League champions losing 4-2, despite racing into an emphatic two-goal lead in the first half, which makes the defeat even more shocking.

Tottenham were rocked by an electric second-half showing from Man City with a lot of the players coming in for poor match ratings off of Alasdair Gold and that feeling resonated in the Sky Sports studio post-match.

That’s because Christiansen picked out Romero for his erratic display and claimed that he always appears to have a mistake in him amid the latest howler from Spurs’ captain Hugo Lloris which saw him concede at his near post.

The Latest: Romero failing to stand up and be counted

Christiansen certainly didn’t hold back in her criticism of Romero post-match, despite someone such as Lloris having a particularly poor game, yet again.

She said: (0:00) “I think they need a centre-back that fits and a centre-back that is a real leader because I think in Dier you’ve got a player who, his best game isn’t defending but he’s a ball playing centre back so I can see why he’s in that central role of a back three.

“But I think  Cristian Romero for example, I think he’s got a mistake in him and he’s a player who plays with his heart on his sleeve, he’s quite erratic and he gets stuck in but I think you need a little bit more discipline in that back three to then let the players in front of you go play and I think they’re lacking.”

The Verdict: Tottenham need defensive reinforcements

Spurs did look to improve their backline over the summer by bringing in Djed Spence, Ivan Perisic and Clement Lenglet but the former has only been afforded seven league minutes thus far and the other two have failed to impress much as of yet.

As things stand Spurs have conceded the sixth-most goals in the entire Premier League which is quite astonishing given they are looking to push for a spot inside the top four so something must change.

Tottenham made a huge commitment to Romero last summer as they splashed out £42 million on the centre back but with his injury record and ill-discipline he’s picked up 16 yellow cards since joining the club on loan originally and has missed a total of 30 games, so he can’t be relied upon to stay fit and keep his cool on the pitch.
