Here in the Football Transfer Tavern we have been impressed with the performances of Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke this season and no one is surprised to see him linked with a move to bigger club during the summer. The Sunday People today report that Tottenham Hotspur have made the 22-year-old Belgian international their top transfer target for the summer.
Benteke netted his 20th goal of a remarkable first season in the league against Chelsea yesterday despite his side’s battle against relegation.
Spurs have looked short in attack all season and their failure to sign the much needed striker in January could well cost them a place in the Champions League.
They are likely to face competition from Arsenal for the Villa front-man who cost the Midlands club £7 million from Genk last summer. Arsene Wenger has earmarked Benteke as a possible solution to his own striking issues as he looks to end the eight-year trophy drought at the club.
A transfer would be made easier if Villa lost their fight against relegation but even if Paul Lambert’s club survive he’ll be in-demand with Villa wanting over £20 million for his services.
