It’s drinks all round in the Transfer Tavern for fans of Tottenham who have been rejoicing this afternoon on hearing news that Eric Dier has been called up to the England squad by head coach Roy Hodgson.
Puzzled looks however have been slapped on the faces of Manchester City supporters upon hearing that Fabian Delph has also been asked to report for duty despite only playing four minutes of football this season.
Hodgson has called up the pair for friendly matches against Spain and France this month following injuries to key players Phil Jagielka, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Dier has been excellent for Spurs this season mainly deployed in a defensive midfield role and is called into the senior squad for the first time.
The surprise of the squad is Delph who has played only four minutes of football for City since injuring his hamstring playing for England in their European Qualifyer against Switzerland. Hodgson obviously sees Delph as a key part of his plans for Euro 2016 next summer and is keen to have him in and around the squad.
The friendlies against reigning champions Spain and next summers hosts France will be big tests for England who breezed through qualifying with a 100% record.
