TT Valuation Evaluation: Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil

This article forms part of our Valuation Evaluation feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at the increase or decrease of a player’s Transfermarkt valuation and whether it is justified or not.

To say Mesut Ozil and Unai Emery did not enjoy a good relationship at Arsenal would be an understatement, with the Spaniard recently launching a scathing attack on his former player.

“His performances are unpredictable. He’s a bit below the top players at the moment. Sometimes Arsenal play better with him but other times he doesn’t make such a difference,” Emery said in an interview with Marca (via Goal) when speaking about the 31-year-old.

Following Emery’s arrival, Ozil has seen his market valuation on Transfermarkt drop from over £40m to £19.8m, which seems a tad excessive. While the German had his struggles under Mikel Arteta’s predecessor, he is still a brilliant technician and has shown as much this season.

With 2.1, Ozil is the leading player at Arsenal for key passes per game in the Premier League (via WhoScored). He also makes the joint-most crosses per game (1.2) and has the second-best pass success rate (88.3%) in the squad.

Technically, there are few players in the Premier League who are better than the 2014 World Cup winner, ranking in the top 10 for key passes per game (minimum of more than five matches) prior to this weekend’s fixtures.

Furthermore, when taking ability into account, Ozil has surely got to be worth more than £20m.
