Marco Silva will be plotting to improve on Everton’s 8th placed finish last season this term.
Everton made numerous signings before the beginning of last season, but many just seemed to not quite make the cut at Goodison Park. Players like Davy Klaassen and Gyfi Sigurdsson simply did not achieve what was expected of them given their big money transfers. The lack of return on the investment saw Ronald Koeman shown the exit door. Even in January, the Blues spent big, bringing in the likes of Theo Walcott for £2o.25m.
Marco Silva will want his side to push on this season, given the level of talent he has at his disposal. He will be aiming to get the most out of his players who underperformed last season.
He has also added Watford’s attacker Richarlison, for a fee of £35m, which could rise to £50m with add-ons.
There are some players however, who have just not worked out for the Toffees, and need to be moved on.
With that in mind, here are two players who Silva has made a mistake by not getting rid of already…
After signing for what now feels like a highly inflated fee of £25m, Yannick Bolasie has never quite got going in an Everton shirt.
The winger has undoubted talent, he is strong and powerful, and his presence alone creates problems. He is quick and has plenty of trickery, and his lethal partnership with Wilfried Zaha lured Everton into the signing.
However, injuries have been against Bolasie, and he has never settled in the Blue of Everton. The 29-year-old is valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt. Everton could still re-coup a large chunk of their outlay if they sell him now.
The 33-year-old Ashley Williams just does not seem the quality Everton need to push forward.
His defensive errors were a large reason for the poor form of the Toffees at the start of the season. He looked slow, laboured and prone to a mistake. His best days are behind him. The Welshman is now valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt. His poor performances made mega-money signing Michael Keane look a worse player than he really is, he could thrive alongside a better defensive partner.
Marco Silva needs better quality at the back next season, if Everton are going to improve on their 8th placed finish.
