When Everton signed Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney in the summer, the Toffees fans here in the Tavern began to get excited about what this season could well hold for their beloved club.
Rooney got off to a tremendous start on the opening day of the season, scoring a bullet header on a dream return to Goodison Park for England’s record goalscorer.
However, since then, things have not gone swimmingly for Rooney. The club have seen a bad run of results come their way, and has once again seen off field problems surface with the news of being pulled over for drink driving emerging last weekend.
Our landlord though here in the Tavern thinks that this weekend represents the ideal chance for Rooney to turn the corner, and what better opportunity to do it than against his form club.
Rooney was withdrawn in the midweek loss to Atalanta, with the Toffees looking poor on their away venture in Europe.
The chance though for Rooney to return to Old Trafford is something he will relish though. If there was ever a game when there was a chance for a turn in their form, this could well be it.
Rooney still has the class and ability to make a difference at the top level, and he will be in a determined mood when he takes to the field this afternoon against United. If Rooney can hit his top form today, then there is every chance Everton could pull off a shock result this weekend.
