West Brom: Gary Rowett not in line for job

Millwall manager Gary Rowett is not in line for the vacant West Brom job, according to BBC’s Simon Stone.

The Lowdown: Rowett rumours

Plenty of managers both in and out of work have been linked with replacing Steve Bruce at The Hawthorns, including Rowett.

The Mirror claimed earlier in the week that the Millwall manager was on a three-man shortlist alongside Chris Wilder and Carlos Corberan, with Baggies chiefs liking the fact Rowett is ‘used to operating on a modest budget’.

However, it looks as if the 48-year-old, who likes to play a 5-4-1 system, won’t be moving to the Midlands.

The Latest: Stone’s update

Reliable BBC reporter Stone took to Twitter on Thursday, revealing he’s been ‘told’ Rowett isn’t in line for the job.

He said that Ron Gourlay is leading an extensive recruitment process and Rowett doesn’t fit the template, with Richard Beale in charge for Saturday’s game against Reading.

The Verdict: Right call?

Rowett has plenty of second-tier experience during his managerial career and is doing an okay job with Millwall at this moment in time, however, he never seemed to be an inspiring target.

The Englishman lasted just 231 days in charge of Stoke City following their relegation to the Championship, so there is no guarantee he would work wonders with this current Baggies squad.

It will be interesting to see who Gourlay brings in and when, but it doesn’t look as if that will be Rowett, which may not come as a blow to several West Brom supporters.
