The Hammers have struggled this year, with Slaven Bilic failing to repeat the fine form shown by his side last season, with the added expectation alongside a stadium move combining and likely contributing to West Ham’s fall from grace.
All is not lost, however, with Bilic in the process of breaking away from the relegation pack – but he needs to ensure that he gets a few deals done this month.
An outstanding criticism of their club from the West Ham fans in the Transfer Tavern has been their failure to adequately recruit players over the summer, with the likes of Zaza and Tore failing to live up to expectations – and this is something that Bilic must look to remedy.
One target that has long been linked with the side is Jermain Defoe, and it would appear that Slaven Bilic is refusing to give up on the veteran Englishman.
The Mirror are reporting that the Hammers have had a bid rejected for the forward, but they also note that the club are likely to be willing to increase their offer in a desperate attempt to get their man.
Any move is likely only going to increase in difficulty, though, with the Mirror also noting that Sam Allardyce is keeping an eye on proceedings, with the new Crystal Palace boss looking to rebuild his side.
This news has drawn a mixed reaction from the West Ham fans in the Transfer Tavern, many of whom are pleased that their side is chasing Defoe, yet are also concerned that any deal will be impossible to come by. They think that Defoe has been vital for Sunderland this year, and unless West Ham can stump up a pretty significant offer – the chances of a deal remain unlikely.
Our landlord thinks that Bilic needs to go all out to land Defoe, though, with the lethal forward’s goal tally likely enough to ensure safety if he can continue his fine form.
Defoe has shown no sign of slowing down, despite being 34-years-old. He scored 15 goals last season, and has already followed that tally up with 11 more during this campaign – and if Sunderland are to stay up, it will likely solely be down to that fine record.
