West Ham: Finance expert praises GSB over ‘shrewd’ development

West Ham: Finance expert praises GSB over ‘shrewd’ development - West Ham News

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has praised the club’s owners for signing Manchester United outcast Jesse Lingard.

Maguire recognises GSB investment

The 28-year-old made the move to the London Stadium on loan until the end of the 2020/21 campaign and had a dream debut against Aston Villa after reuniting with manager David Moyes.

Lingard scored a second-half brace to topple the Villains 3-1 on Wednesday night after struggling with the Red Devils in recent seasons.

What year were West Ham originally founded?

Since his introduction to Manchester United’s first-team, Lingard has scored 33 goals and provided 20 assists in 210 outings (Transfermarkt) and has now started his West Ham career off with a bang.

Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire applauded David Gold, David Sullivan and Karen Brady for getting the Lingard move done before the deadline passed, who have been heavily criticised for their lack of spending down the years.

He said: “First of all, there is financial pressure. The owners have had to put more money in. The club has also borrowed money, so it’s not got spare cash to spend.

“The Jesse Lingard signing has already looked absolutely brilliant. More and more clubs are playing without a striker now that City have proved it can be done.

“So from a financial perspective, he could prove to be quite a shrewd signing in terms of the money they might otherwise have had to spend on a striker.

“And in the current economic climate, it makes sense not to make knee-jerk decisions if you aren’t absolutely sure about the player you’re targeting.”

Transfer Tavern Verdict

We think Maguire is spot on here. Signing Lingard on a loan deal was a clever bit of business from West Ham, and as desperate for a striker as fans were in the January transfer window, panic-buying one who may or may not fit Moyes’ needs would have been a disaster.

As first impressions go, the 24-cap international illustrated that he could be a reliable signing in the next coming months, with West Ham high-flying in the table in 5th place before Saturday’s trip to Fulham.

Time will tell if Lingard can remain consistent from now until the end of the current campaign and truly prove to be a genius bit of business from GSB.
