However, recent reports suggest January might be the best time for the east Londoners to make a move for the player.
The latest on John Lundstram’s future at Sheffield United
Lundstram has been a vital part of the Blades getting promoted to and staying in the Premier League, making 94 appearances for the Yorkshire side since 2017. However, his future has recently been the subject of speculation, as the midfielder has been struggling to agree terms with Sheffield United.
If the Blades hadn’t used a clause in his contract which keeps him at Bramall Lane for another year, then he would have become a free agent this summer, and he has now been linked with a move away from the club.
The latest update suggests a new contract will never be agreed, as Chris Wilder is willing to let the midfielder leave in January so that they can get some money for him as he could leave for free next summer.
Should West Ham make a move for John Lundstram?
The Blades haven’t had the greatest start to the 2020/21 season as they only have one point from six games, with Lundstram also struggling for form. He has featured in all six matches and picked up three yellow cards whilst only managing on average 0.5 interceptions per game (WhoScored).
However, his first season in the Premier League last term highlighted his quality in both attack and defence. The Englishman scored five goals and supplied three assists, along with averaging 1.3 shots per game. In terms of defensive work, he managed 1.3 clearances, one interception and 1.4 tackles per match (WhoScored), while his manager has hailed the 26-year-old as “outstanding”.
It seems like a no-brainer for West Ham to try and sign a central midfielder who can perform well at both ends of the pitch. Even if he might not automatically start for the club, Lundstram would give some great squad depth and provide some healthy competition for places. Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek currently occupy the roles in the middle of the pitch, but David Moyes would have a pleasant selection dilemma on his hands.
Also, Lundstram should be available for a cheaper price, due to his contract running out and Sheffield United seemingly willing to sell him in January to avoid the risk of losing him on a free transfer next summer.
In other West Ham news, the club are hoping to tie down one player by offering him a new deal. Have a read who it is here!
