West Ham would improve their defence massively with £18m-rated Englishman – Agreed?

The West Ham fans gathered in and around the Transfer Tavern are feeling optimistic for the future under Manuel Pellegrini but realise he will only be a success should the board back him with significant funds this summer.

The football world all agreed that West Ham’s appointment of Manuel Pellegrini was a statement of their ambition for the upcoming season and should he be given the right resources, maybe, just maybe, the Hammers can be the strong force the board promised they would be.

For that to happen though, major improvements need to be made to their side, starting with defensive reinforcements. West Ham conceded the joint-highest amount of goals last season (68) and so to solve that our punters believe Man United’s Phil Jones would be a credible option.

Valued at £18 million by Transfer Markt, Jones has been a versatile player for Man United ever since joining in 2011. With the ability to play right-back and defensive midfield as well as his normal centre-back spot, West Ham could bag themselves a player who is accomplished in playing more than one position. The 26-year-old may find his position in jeopardy seeing as United are already spending a lot of money on new talent that could limit his game-time.

The Englishman featured in 23 Premier League games last season and within the games he played, 15 of those games resulted in clean sheets. Of course that isn’t solely because of Phil Jones but he still remains an important centre-back, one with no fear of flying into tackles and one that could make a great addition at the London Stadium to help West Ham progress to where they want to be.
