The Transfer Tavern has seen a fair few of spectacularly astonishing transfers from down the years but none come close to some of those snapped up by Premier League side Everton, who have stunned fans with their business at times. 

Focusing on the current window, the Toffees have got very little to be moaning about with the recent surge of cash being pumped into the club; seven first-team signings this summer with more expected to be following suit.

Our tavern landlord has suggested the most high-profile of those who have been snatched up by manager Ronald Koeman is England top goal scorer Wayne Rooney, who has returned to Merseyside after initially leaving thirteen years ago for Manchester United.

However, a recent debate has arisen in the tavern from fans by the bar about who have been Everton’s more surprising additions over the last decade or two, and there are plenty of candidates who could top that ongoing list.

Here are the TWO most bizarre signings the club have made over the last fifteen years……

Royston Drenthe

Royston Drenthe was tipped to succeed in the footballing career after coming through the ranks at Dutch giants Feyenoord, earning a boyhood dream move to Real Madrid in 2007 at the age of 20.

The tavern’s Everton-supporting punters had high hopes for the winger after penning a season-long loan deal at Goodison Park for the 2011/12 campaign, and certainly kicked it off to a confident start.

Although, it went in a downward spiral there having fallen out with boss David Moyes after returning to training late having been allowed compassionate leave, noting himself in the naughty books of the manager.

He was left out of the FA Cup semi-final tie and was told to stay away from the club, with his Everton career abruptly enduring horrendously and returned to the Spanish capital.

Drenthe has since slightly entertained the tavern with unspectacular spells at Reading and Sheffield Wednesday, before having up his boots last summer after struggling to find a new club, at just 30-years-old.

Oumar Niasse

Roberto Martinez was aiming to add extra fire power to his attack when he landed the signing of Oumar Niasse for Everton on deadline day in February 2016, instantly going into the Toffees’ squad.

It took a uninspiring twist from there for the Senegal international, who after 152 minutes of football, was not given a squad number of new boss Ronald Koeman and the fans by the bar have suggested it was due to ‘behind closed doors’ reasons as to why the manager was not keen on the striker.

Failing to find a new club interested in his services, Niasse was finally added to the Everton first-team but was swiftly demoted to the under-23 side and his locker was revoked, prompting a move away.

In January, the 27 year-old completed a loan transfer to struggling Hull City where he netted four goals in seventeen appearances and returned to Goodison Park upon their relegation.
