Manchester United dropped their first points of the season yesterday when they were held by Stoke City in the late kick off, with the Red Devils settling for a 2-2 draw in Staffordshire.
United have made an excellent start to the Premier League season this time out and were in scintillating form during their first three games of the season. Jose Mourinho has got them free scoring and looking solid at the back, and things overall look good for the club.
Our landlord here in the Tavern though has been assessing the clubs chances in Europe, with the Champions League due to start this weekend.
Despite the busy upcoming schedule, he thinks that out of all the clubs from England competing in the competition this year, it’s United who look the best equipped to deal with the rigours of regular European and league football.
Manager Mourinho has managed to address the needs of his squad this summer in every position and he has two players minimum for every position at the moment. This bodes well for the European ties where he might expect to comfortably win, allowing him to make changes as and when he pleases.
Add to this a returning Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a few months time, and United look well set to be able to compete on all fronts this year.
It remains to be seen if the Red Devils’ league form can transcend into Europe, but in Mourinho they have the one manager who’s record speaks for itself, and it could be that he is the difference maker for the club when it comes to Champions League success this term.
