Wolves: Reporter backs Joao Gomes to be involved in first team ‘imminently’

Estadio Morumbi, Sao Paulo, Brazil - August 24, 2022. Flamengo's Joao Gomes celebrates scoring.

Express & Star journalist Liam Keen has claimed that Wolves’ Joao Gomes will be playing with the team ‘imminently’.

The Lowdown: January signing

Gomes signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with Julen Lopetegui’s side last month, joining from Brazilian outfit Flamengo.

The 21-year-old is yet to make his debut for Wolves as of yet, but he amassed 117 appearances in all competitions for his previous club.

With the domestic season in Brazil coming to an end in November prior to the World Cup, Gomes has been short of match fitness – but it seems it won’t be long before he pulls on a Wolves shirt.

The Latest: Coming soon

Keen claimed it could be a while before Gomes starts for Wolves, but he could appear off the bench very soon in a substitute cameo.

Speaking on the E&S Wolves Podcast, he said: “He was training and he was involved with Flamengo, just didn’t play because it was their sort of pre-season, effectively.

“So, 3-4 weeks as a very max, in terms of starting. I would hedge my bets on that, that’s probably about right.

“If you think about it, now is his sort of Wolves pre-season. So expect to see him involved in games imminently, I would say, but not from the start and not getting a lot of minutes.”

The Verdict: We’ll have to wait

In our view, Wolves have signed someone who could potentially have an exciting future ahead of him, and we believe the switch to Molineux could benefit Gomes’ career.

Brazilian football expert Vene Casagrande raved about the player when he joined the Old Gold, describing him as someone who ‘seeks to evolve’ and the Wolves fans will ‘fall in love’ with him when speaking to the club’s website.

With Lopetegui at the helm, we back Gomes to improve and develop really well in the Premier League.

The Wolves boss has managed top names like Casemiro and Sergio Ramos, so in our view, he knows how to manage egos and work alongside players who’ve played at the highest level.

Recently, the club appear to be on the up given their form. They’ve moved out of the relegation zone and have lost only two of their last six league games.

We believe Gomes’ career is in safe hands within the current Wolves setup, as he’s working under a manager who has been around the block and has plenty of experience.
