Wolves: Pedro Martins ‘back in consideration’ for manager vacancy

Groupama Stadium, Lyon, France - September 30, 2021. Olympiacos coach Pedro Martins shakes hands with referee Alejandro Hernandez.

Wolverhampton Wanderers managerial candidate Pedro Martins is now ‘back in consideration’ to take over at Molineux, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Contrasting claims

The Old Gold had identified former Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui as their number one target to replace Bruno Lage, but suffered a setback after he turned down the chance to move to the Premier League.

The Midlands outfit were allegedly considering approaching the 52-year-old Martins early on in their pursuit, but reports then suggested that he’s not in the running to be the next to enter the dugout.

The Latest: Wolves to reconsider Martins

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones revealed that Wolves are set to reconsider Martins after he rejected the opportunity to join Hull City.

“Wolves have gone back to the drawing board, and I’ve got a feeling Pedro Martins really is someone that is back in consideration now.

“There are other names too being pushed in their consideration, but they’ll want someone who they have a clear understanding of.”

The Verdict: Big coup?

If Wolves are able to convince Martins to become the new manager, it could actually be an exciting coup for Fosun and Jeff Shi given his remarkable track record.

During his reign at Olympiacos, the Portuguese coach won 143 and drew 41 out of his 221 matches in charge, losing just 37 games over a four-year spell (Transfermarkt).

Martins also led his side to three consecutive Greek Super League titles, and this is exactly the level of consistency and long-term planning that Wolves need to introduce.
