With every World Cup there used to be ‘the song’. An uncomfortable drudge-a-long where famous faces did their bit to drum up a bit of patriotism whilst tying desperately not to look like prize plums. Rarely did either they achieve either.
World In Motion genuinely broke the mold. The song was put together by real musos’ so it had a melody as well as chorus. But what it also had was a rap as it’s ‘middle eight’. That rap was delivered by John Barnes. Liverpool and England star.
Initially, he was greeted with a little mocking. What the modern footballer would describe as a ‘bit of stick’. But that ‘bit of stick’ soon subsided. Barnes was cool. He was a really good footballer in a really good song that just happened to be about football.
One of the most memorable off the pitch World Cup moments. Ever.
