It has been a truly incredible summer for the Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern, one that will surely be long remembered by the Red Devils. 

After struggling for so long to attract truly top talent, Jose Mourinho’s arrival in the dugout has seen stellar names such as Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic follow him to the Theatre of Dreams.

While their current playing squad is undoubtedly the envy of many, the fact the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ will be expected to challenge on all available fronts will clearly take a toll on all the players.

Having made a statement (and then some) in the market already, the Portuguese has a rather odd bonus as the infamous Deadline Day fast approaches.

The sheer magnitude of United usually means their signings must fit a certain marketable profile, though the nature of the last couple months have finally lifted the pressure from Ed Woodward’s shoulders.

Now, the former Chelsea and Real Madrid coach is free to target players who can actually improve his squad without having too much of an impact to the harmony. He can now act in a purely footballing sense.

So, with just hours to go before the window slams shut, who should Mourinho be targeting?

Here’s THREE who could improve his squad.

Jose Fonte

Though United boast the superb talents of Daley Blind, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly in central defensive berths, it is probably fair to say it remains one of the lightest departments of their squad.

With Rojo failing to wholly convince at all, Southampton skipper Jose Fonte would surely be a better option in backing up the formidable trio previously mentioned.

While the 32-year-old is barely a world beater, he has proved a cool and commanding presence on the South Coast for a number of years now and could flourish under his compatriot’s tutelage, even the autumn of his career.

Showed he was a big game player during the European Championships.

Jack Wilshere

Ok, a controversial one.

United SHOULD sign Wilshere if the England international does indeed become available.

The 24-year-old is masterful on the ball, though his all-around game needs improving. Too often, he is rash either in the tackle or in his decision to release the final pass.

Under a supreme tactician like Mourinho, Wilshere could finally develop into the deep-lying playmaker everyone at international level so wants him to be. Dropping deep between the two centre-backs, he could mould his game into a Marco Verratti.

Seamus Coleman

Antonio Valencia has recently impressed in the right-back role, though the Ecuadorian has often flattered to deceive in the particular berth.

While a powerful runner, the former Wigan man’s lack of defensive nous can be exploited against truly top sides.

With that in mind, Everton’s Seamus Coleman would surely be a solid option to bring in to the right-hand side of the backline, an area lacking any strength and depth for a number of years now.

The Irishman boasts similar attacking enterprise, though is a better defender.
