Newcastle United supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern recently after seeing their side’s poor run of form continue with a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Leicester City on Saturday, in what was their sixth Premier League loss in their last seven matches.

Rafa Benitez’s men made a solid start to life back in the top-flight by winning four of their opening nine games, yet things have since taken a turn for the worse and now the Magpies are lurking perilously close to the bottom three. And last weekend’s disappointing defeat to Leicester hasn’t helped their cause either with goals from Riyad Mahrez and Demarai Gray, as well as an own goal from Ayoze Perez, enough to seal the three points for Claude Puel’s side, thus inflicting a ninth Premier League defeat on the Magpies.

Thus, there have been many deflated and disappointed Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent weeks, many of whom are turning their attentions to Wednesday’s vital home clash with Sam Allardyce’s Everton, as the North East giants seek to finally get back to winning ways in the Premier League.

In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Magpies fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking winger Rolando Aarons with a move to Championship outfit Leeds United.

The 22-year-old has only managed three senior appearances for Benitez’s side so far this season, totalling just 140 minutes of action, and as such he could be looking for a way out of St James’ Park in January in a bid for more regular football.

And Leeds are one side reportedly interested in landing the former England Under-20 international, and were Aarons to indeed make the move to Elland Road, here are TWO other Newcastle stars who could follow him to Yorkshire…

Mo Diame

Midfielder Mo Diame made his first Premier League start of the season at the beginning of this horrendous run against Burnley back on October 30, and his performance that day was indicative of a player out of his depth at top-flight level.

The 30-year-old was poor and did little to provide the Magpies with the sort of platform required in the centre of midfield, yet he has still managed two further starts in their six games succeeding that one to suggest that he remains in Benitez’s plans.

Yet with Mikel Merino, Isaac Hayden, and Jonjo Shelvey to choose from, and arguably ahead of him in the pecking order, Diame could well be on his way out in January, and has been linked with a move away in recent times, namely to Aston Villa.

But with Leeds themselves hoping to sustain a promotion push in the second half of the season, manager Thomas Christiansen may need more options all over the pitch, and Diame would certainly give him an accomplished one in the middle of the park.

Aleksandar Mitrovic

It’s pretty evident that striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is not in Benitez’s plans, given that he has featured sparingly for Newcastle this term, despite their obvious struggles in front of goal.

The 23-year-old has mustered just seven appearances in all competitions for the Magpies this season but none of them have been Premier League starts, even if he has featured in four of their last five league games off the substitute’s bench.

Yet given their goal-scoring woes, one would have expected a few more appearances and starts for the Serbia international this term, which all points to a likely exit in January, especially with a World Cup to come in the summer.

And with Leeds ideally in need of more firepower upfront, it’s a move the Whites could well look to make in the New Year.
