2 players who could follow Inigo Martinez to Manchester City in January

Manchester City supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern so far this season such has been their side’s wonderful start to the campaign, which got even better on Sunday after the Citizens edged past Huddersfield 2-1 at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s men were tipped by many to go on and win the Premier League title this season, and they have certainly made their intentions clear with 12 wins from their opening 13 league games, although their most recent one over the Terriers was one of the hardest fought. A Nicolas Otamendi own goal gave David Wagner’s side a surprise half time lead in West Yorkshire, although that only seemed to spur the visitors on as goals from Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling sealed a 2-1 victory for Guardiola’s men, in turn extending their winning streak to 18 games in all competitions, and maintaining their eight-point lead over Manchester United at the summit.

Subsequently, there have been many delighted City supporters in the Tavern so far this season, and many are already anticipating their team’s return to action when they host Southampton at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, with the Saints going to the North West full of confidence after dispatching Everton 4-1 at St Mary’s on Sunday.

In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Citizens fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking them with a move for Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez.

The 26-year-old was reportedly on the radar of Guardiola over the summer but no move materialised, yet reports suggest that the Citizens have been keeping tabs on the centre-back’s efforts so far this season, and could be tempted into a move in January given the recent injury sustained by John Stones.

And were Martinez to make the move to City in the New Year, here are TWO other stars who could follow the 26-year-old to the Etihad Stadium…

Ryan Bertrand

Ryan Bertrand has become Gareth Southgate’s first choice left-back in the last year or so given the injury to Tottenham’s Danny Rose, yet the Southampton defender is unlikely to relinquish his place easily such has been his recent form.

The 28-year-old has been an ever-present for Mauricio Pellegrino’s side so far this term but produced his best display of the campaign in their 4-1 thumping of Everton on Sunday, with the Englishman laying on two assists to help the Saints to a comprehensive victory.

And his fine efforts for the South Coast outfit have reportedly attracted the attention of City boss Guardiola, and with Benjamin Mendy out for the best part of the season through injury, the Citizens could look to Bertrand as the perfect addition to their left-back ranks.

Alexis Sanchez

The future of Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez has been speculated upon for a while now, yet it appears increasingly likely that he’ll be leaving the Emirates Stadium at some stage in 2018.

The Chile international was absolutely superb for the Gunners last term with 24 goals and 11 assists in 38 Premier League appearances, and although he hasn’t quite re-produced that form thus far, the 28-year-old has recently shown signs of a return to form, most notably with an excellent display in the North London derby earlier this month.

But with his contract up in the summer, Arsenal may look to cash in on the talented forward, and City are reportedly long-term admirers of Sanchez, with Guardiola having worked with him previously at Barcelona.

And that is certainly a move which could take place in the New Year.
