Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are keenly anticipating the arrival of new signings as the club looks to bolster their survival hopes.

Having secured deals for Christian Atsu and Florian Lejeune, the Toon Army are expecting further reinforcements to improve squad depth and increase the Magpies’ chances of Premier League survival.  Newcastle have already missed out on a couple of their primary transfer targets (Tammy Abraham and Willy Caballero), and their relentless pursuit for a striker continues. One area of the pitch where Newcastle has struggled is at left-back.

Paul Dummett has been Newcastle’s main left-back over the course of recent years, and despite making 35 appearances for the Magpies in the Championship last season, doubts still linger regarding his suitability and capability to play at the highest level.

Accordingly, many of our resident Newcastle fans are hoping that the club prioritises the arrival of a new left-back. Our landlord has decided to take a look at two left-backs that Newcastle should consider signing this summer.

Kieran Gibbs

The Englishman has seen his importance regress at Arsenal over the duration of recent seasons, and consequently, it could be that Gibbs is willing to depart the north London club this summer. The 27-year-old is the type of player that Benitez would be hoping to attract, a player endowed with considerable experience in England’s top division with one of Europe’s most prestigious team.

For a team that is devoid of Premier League experience and outstanding players, Gibbs could be the perfect acquisition – while also addressing the club’s issues at left-back. His defensive contribution is excellent, and his ability to retain possession is also excellent. It will be a marvellous signing and a statement of great intent if Gibbs moves to St James’ Park this window.

Baba Rahman

Another left-back that Rafa Benitez should look to target is Chelsea’s, Abdul Baba Rahman. Having sustained a serious cruciate injury in January, his Schalke career was concluded earlier than anticipated.  Now, it appears that the Ghanaian will be deemed surplus to requirements at the champions. Consequently, he will be looking for destinations to revive his career following an injury.

His tackling and intercepting abilities are the main components of his defensive game; he is also very proficient at the opposite end of the pitch thanks to his impressive crossing and dribbling ability. A loan move could prove to be extremely beneficial for all parties involved, a low risk, high reward transfer.
