There’s a great debate raging in the Transfer Tavern at the moment and, truth be known, it’s been going on for a serious amount of time.
The debate in question? Should Arsenal sack Arsene Wenger? It’s been going on for years between the two camps of Gunners fans, the Wenger ins and the Wenger outs, and both make good points.
Some are fed up with what they perceive as a lack of ambition and progress whilst others reckon things would be far worse without the Frenchman.
Since he joined the club in 1996 he’s seen his fair share of both success and failure at the club with the Invincibles season one of the greatest achievements in English football. That was a long time go though and some think it’s time to go.
This needs a neutral figure then to fully map out the advantages and disadvantages and fortunately the Transfer Tavern has such a person.
Here, then, are the TWO pros and TWO cons to Arsenal sacking Arsene Wenger as per our landlord…
Pro 1: Renewed ambition
With a new manager at the helm it could just give the Gunners playing squad and their fans fresh impetus to succeed.
To keep things different and ambitious over two decades would be hard for anyone and that could be where Wenger is faltering.
If Arsenal got a new, energetic manager in with different ideas, it might just unlock the full potential of the squad.
Con 1: The Fergie effect
Many Arsenal fans our worried that the club could follow Manchester United’s example of when Sir Alex Ferguson left.
The Red Devils famously fell apart after the legendary Scot left and the feeling is that could happen in north London too after all these years of Wenger in charge.
It’s something the board really have to consider before any decision is made.
Pro 2: A united fan base?
If and when Wenger leaves two things should happen amongst the divided fan base.
The Wenger ins should get behind their new manager as he is now the one in charge of their club whilst the Wenger outs are finally getting what they want.
The overall picture is, then, both sets of fans are behind the new boss and that can surely only be a good thing.
Con 2: Losing a legend
When all is said and done, you cannot deny that Arsene Wenger is an Arsenal legend, and so to simply sack him would be pretty poor form from a club that prides itself on doing things the right way.
The Frenchman has earned his right to decide when it’s best he leaves and no-one can really argue with that.
He has to be involved with the club in some way and sacking him would stop that happening.
