The deal looks set to be completed over the next few days; Michy Batshuayi is ALMOST a Chelsea player.
The deal has brought some mixed reactions in the Tavern. Some Chelsea fans are really pleased with the deal, and think he will offer great competition and goals up front.
Others however look at his price and his position in the side and think he is a giant waste of money.
Certainly there are a few ways of looking at it, so lets break down this deal and try and work out whether it was good or bad for business.
Here are 2 PROS and 2 CONS to Chelsea signing Michy Batshuayi – Agreed?
PRO – Goal Scorer

First, you have to look at his qualities on the field. There is no doubting that Michy Batshuayi is a fantastic striker.
After scoring nearly 40 goals in three years for Standard Liege, he then made the switch to Marseille in 2014; and has since scored nearly 30 goals. He is a prolific front man.
His quality does not just stop with goals; scout reports on the player have highlighted his pace and technical ability on the pitch, alongside his ability as a target man.
Many fans will be pleased to hear the paralells that have been made between him and Didier Drogba, indicating what he might bring to this Chelsea side.
CON – Competition with Diego Costa

These statistics are all well and good; but will they matter if he isn’t playing?
Diego Costa is quite obviously Chelsea’s number 9, and it will be up to Batshuayi to displace him.
But then, of course, you cannot expect Costa to be happy to sit on the bench every week, so that will almost certainly cause a number of issues.
Whilst Diego Costa is still a Chelsea player, Batshuayi will not be Chelsea’s primary striker, and that can only be a bad thing.
It is important to remember however that this can be offset by a change in formation. Conte has become renowned for playing with two strikers, and Batshuayi and Costa could potentially form a deadly partnership together; which could make this con irrelevant.
PRO – Potential

You can also look at Batshuayi as a player for the future, so it doesn’t really matter if he isn’t playing every week.
His potential is endless, despite already having scored a huge number of goals, he is still improving every week.
At 22 years old, simply playing around the best players in the world every day in training, and then getting an opportunity every other week to play will do him wonders.
He wont be expecting to start every week; he is almost certainly a player that has been brought in as a long term player, and he will recognize that.
He will do a job when called upon, and has the potential to become a world beater in the years to come.
CON – Price

Of course, this is again offset by the fact that Chelsea are reportedly going to have to fork out £33 million for the striker; and that is not the sort of money you would pay to have someone sit on the bench.
In fact, that is a higher fee than the club paid for Diego Costa just two years ago!
If the club have signed him for such a huge fee and are looking for him to play second fiddle to Diego Costa, then that would certainly hint towards him being a bit of a waste.
Again, with a formation change utilising the two strikers together; now that would make a bit more sense.
Well…that didn’t solve anything! There are clearly a number benefits and advantages to the signing of Michy Batsuayi – we will just have to wait and see how it plays out in the coming months.
