With Jose Mourinho set to be in the dugout for Manchester United next season, our resident Red Devils fans in the Transfer Tavern are dreaming of a return to the top of the Premier League.

It’s widely expected though, for any such turnaround to take place, that the former Chelsea boss will shake things up quite a bit in the Summer transfer window.

A number of players are already being linked with the club as well as those set to be deemed surplus to requirements by the Portuguese and one possible incoming could be Andre Gomes.

Gomes is a Portuguese central midfielder who could be the start of a new era in the middle of the park at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick is ageing whilst Bastian Schweinsteiger has injury doubts. Meanwhile Morgan Schneiderlin and Ander Herrera have been inconsistent and this all leaves the opportunity for a new player to stamp his authority on the central midfield position.

The door could be open for Gomes then, so what are his pros and cons? Our landlord brings you two of each…..

Pro 1 – Dribbling

In La Liga, Gomes embarked on close to two dribbles a game from his central role.

This would provide United with some drive from midfield which they currently lack. The Valencia man also drew an average of 1.5 fouls a game, and so would be a clever player in the Premier League for United to get up the pitch with.

The Red Devils’ attacking in 2015/16 was criticised a lot and so if Gomes can come in and enhance that, he’d be a more than welcome addition for the fans.

Con 1 – Tackling

In a league that’s far more physical than La Liga, Gomes and Manchester United risk losing the crucial battle in the centre of the pitch.

Gomes also averaged two fouls a game last season in La Liga and that would no doubt become an issue for the club if they don’t address it.

Pro 2 – Passing

You’d expect this one.

Most players in La Liga are able to thread a ball and Gomes is no different.

The Valencia man was most threatening playing from a central midfield role as opposed to an advanced midfielder and this is shown through his assists stats of four in 23 appearances in this position.

Evidently Gomes can supply chances from deep and this is another area the Red Devils have struggled in for a few seasons.

Con 2 – Shooting

Whilst he can lay on goals he doesn’t score many.

Gomes has five goals from his 42 starts in all competitions this season just gone and that makes for steady not spectacular reading.

Throw in the fact that he averaged 1.3 shots a game and you’d expect a slightly higher goal tally than the one he has.

Of course he has time on his side to improve this but goal-scoring midfielders are key to any title win and Jose Mourinho will know this.
