Liverpool fans in the Football Transfer Tavern aren’t particularly enjoying their side’s 2017 so far, with the Reds slipping even further behind the Premier League leaders Chelsea at the weekend.

Jurgen Klopp’s side’s surprise 3-2 defeat by a struggling Swansea side at Anfield on Saturday was followed up by the Blues beating Hull 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, meaning the gap between the top title hopefuls is now 10 points with 16 matches of the season left to play – the supporters standing at the bar fear it is an advantage their side won’t be able to overturn.

The Merseyside outfit appear to be struggling without influential forward Sadio Mane, who is currently representing Senegal at the African Cup of Nations.

One of his replacements in the starting XI, Daniel Sturridge, has struggled to make an impact since the start of the month and has scored just six goals in 18 appearances in all competitions for the Reds this term – a disappointing return that has often been discussed by the tavern regulars.

According to the Mirror, via the Sun podcast, former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright believes the 27-year-old should leave the club and make a move to a top European side – such as French giants Paris Saint-Germain – in order to reignite his career – the landlord is beginning to feel as though it could be the best move for both parties too.

He doesn’t appear to fit Klopp’s style

Barring any huge run of defeats, it would appear that Jurgen Klopp could be Liverpool manager for a number of years to come, which isn’t good news for Daniel Sturridge.

The striker has struggled to find a spot in the starting XI ever since the German manager came to Anfield and most of his appearances this term have come from the substitutes’ bench, with the likes of Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi sometimes prefrerred up top – the supporters standing at the bar couldn’t argue with that decision with the free-scoring form the Reds showed earlier in the season.

And that is the problem.

The England international is a goalscorer but he just doesn’t seem to fit in with the style of play that Klopp wants, where his forward players press and have that intelligent movement and quick, intricate passes – it all points to an Anfield exit from the landlord’s point of view.

His injury record

One thing that Sturridge has struggled with since he made the move to Anfield – and one reason why he has sometimes found first team minutes hard to come by – has been because of the injuries he has suffered – it is something that will have frustrated everyone involved, including the Reds fans that frequent the tavern.

The striker has had 10 separate spells on the sidelines because of them since 2013, including two this season when he missed the beginning of the Premier League campaign with a hip problem, before also suffering a calf injury at the end of November.

These recurring injuries mean that selling the attacker – preferably for a decent fee to a club like Paris Saint-Germain – would be amazing business for Liverpool and one that landlord is in favour of if it allows Jurgen Klopp to then use the transfer fee to strengthen his squad.
