The Spurs and Newcastle fans are in the Transfer Tavern tonight arguing over who will have the last laugh come the final whistle on Sunday.

Premier League runners up last season Tottenham have a tough opening fixture to kick off their 2017/18 campaign as they travel up to St James’ Park to face Newcastle.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will surely be pushing to go one better than last season and win the league title this time out so an opening day win will be crucial to that.

Rafa Benitez did what many expected of him last season as he got Newcastle promoted straight back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, winning the Championship title in the process.

Tottenham will go into this match as the clear favourites but St James’ Park has an atmosphere that makes it very difficult for travelling players and fans alike so it is likely that only a handful of details on the day will decide the fixture.

On that note, here are the two things that will decide Tottenham v Newcastle on Sunday.

Tottenham’s full backs

Following the departure of Kyle Walker to Man City and the injury to Danny Rose keeping him out of the starting lineup, Pochettino has to put his trust in two fresh full backs.

Ben Davies and Kieran Trippier have played first team football before and proven their talents in those games.

But ask any Spurs fan and they’d rather have the experienced duo at the back on the opening day.

Davies has the potential to become key members of the Spurs squad but if they don’t play well on Sunday, the likes of Matt Ritchie and Andros Townsend could have an easy day at the office.

Trippier is out injured, so perhaps Jacob Murphy will have some joy in chasing down the flanks.

Harry Kane

Harry Kane is one of the best strikers in the world right now and on his day, he can make scoring a hat-trick in the Premier League look like an easy achievement.

The modern-day embodiment of Newcastle legend Alan Shearer, if Kane is in the mood – and how could he not be on the opening day – then he could win the game all by himself.

He scored 29 goals in just 30 league games last season and will surely be looking to improve on those numbers come the end of this season.

The Newcastle defence are going to have a very busy day with him around.
