This past transfer window wasn’t exactly the best one for Rafa Benitez, missing out on several targets and looking a disgruntled figure in front of the cameras.

Our Magpie fans here in the Tavern would have liked to have seen early business done and deals wrapped up for some of the more experienced players they were linked with.

The team seem to be replicating their manager’s mood with two opening defeats to Tottenham and Huddersfield, a 3-0 win over West Ham papered over some cracks and gave the toon fans something to feel good about.

With a less than perfect window Newcastle will be looking for a better showing come January but until then, they’ll have to deal with the signings and squad they currently have.

Not bringing in a quality N0.9

Newcastle fans will fondly remember the days of Les Ferdinand, Alan Shearer, Andy Cole and recently Papiss Cisse.

A quality number nine, who can chip in with their fair share of goals and have the fans up on their feet.

Without goals, any team is going to struggle in the Premier League, especially in their first season. Newcastle’s three strikers have only two goals between them, one has recorded just one shot on target.

Benitez is going to need firepower until at least January where he’ll be hoping he can get some decent business done.

They’re some free agents floating about the market that can still be brought in but will Newcastle take the gamble.

Missing out on Harry Maguire

It was widely reported that Rafa was a long term admirer of Maguire, having watched him closely last season at Hull.

Newcastle’s current record transfer fee is £16m and probably weren’t willing to break it for a defender who’s had one season of top-flight experience.

Leicester, meanwhile, were willing to splash the cash and even though it’s only three games in, it’s looking like money well spent.

Premier League safety relays on a solid foundation, building from the back. Benitez was in the market for a centre-back early on but we all know Mike Ashley’s stance on loosening the purse strings this year.

Maguire’s young, may only have one but still has Premier League experience. Plus, playing in a team fighting relegation and with his recent England call up looks like a bright future ahead of him.

Rafa will not be happy having missed out on another target who is turning out to look like a steal.
