It’s been a pretty decent start to the Premier League campaign for Everton and their fans here in the Transfer Tavern seem fairly happy with how things are developing this campaign!

Ronald Koeman has begun to find a winning strategy in recent weeks and after the impressive 2-0 away victory at Leicester City on Boxing Day, the Toffees will be looking to kick on into 2017.

Much to the delight of our Everton-mad punters, European football is well within reach and with a couple of strong additions in January, Koeman’s side should be well within reach of the top-six come the end of the campaign.

But it’s not all going to be easy-going for Everton in January and as we’ve seen in seasons past, mistakes have been made that haven’t at all helped momentum going towards the end of the season.

So with that in mind, we think there are a handful of things the Toffees should avoid in the January transfer market and here’s three of them…

Don’t buy another Oumar Niasse

In one of the most disastrous January transfer moves we’ve seen in years, Everton’s former boss Roberto Martinez brought Oumar Niasse to the club for an astronomical £13.5 million.

He has made just a handful of appearances for the Toffees and is still on their books, albeit in the reserves after being left out of the Premier League squad for the campaign.

It’s possibly the biggest waste of money we’ve seen in the Premier League in years and Everton need to avoid this next month at all costs.

Nail down their targets

Everton have been linked with one of the brightest young prospects in English football in recent weeks and they’re growing ever-closer to wrapping up a deal for Charlton youngster Ademola Lookman.

But we’ve seen the Toffees miss out on key transfers in the past at this time of the year, just because they’ve not been quick enough to the players. Lookman is one of the brightest youngsters we’ve seen at this level for years and they need to nail him down or they’ll miss out to a rival.

Keep hold of their biggest talents

Everton have lost the likes of John Stones and Steven Naismith in recent transfer windows and they’re both big players who have left a hole in the spine of the team.

Defensively, Everton haven’t quite adjusted to the gap left by Stones and more than ever, it’s important that they keep hold of their best players.

We’re talking the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Ashley Williams, Ross Barkley – they all need to remain at Goodison Park if the Toffees are to have any success this campaign.
