3 potential Man Utd starting XI’s for Saturday’s match with West Ham United

The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are very excited for the new season…

It has been a very good summer for the Red Devils, and with so many players brought in, the only way is up for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Domestically, the club struggled last season, eventually finishing outside of the top four once again.

Fortunately, Mourinho’s focus on European competition paid off, and the Red Devils are now in the Champions League by virtue of a Europa League win last year.

All in all, last year was a fantastic campaign for the Red Devils, but the coming season is going to be much harder.

With more players and more quality, Mourinho will be expected to reach the top four with ease, whilst some fans in the Transfer Tavern are touting his side to challenge for the Premier League title.

The opening game of the season is this weekend, and the Red Devils are set to take on West Ham. It will be a tough game, but Mourinho has a few options to go for with regards to both his team selection and his formation.

With that said, here are 3 potential Man Utd starting XI’s for Saturday’s match with West Ham…

4-2-3-1

This has been the formation for Mourinho over the last few years, and he utilised it frequently last season.

With David De Gea between the sticks, Antonio Valencia, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Matteo Darmian are likely to feature in the defence.

Ahead of them, Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera will likely sit just behind Paul Pogba.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Anthony Martial could get the nod on the flanks, whilst Romelu Lukaku is sure to lead the line for the Red Devils.

This formation offers a balance between offence and attack, but it has proven to be increasingly ineffective as of late.

3-5-2

Jose Mourinho has been practising with this formation during pre-season, and it is pretty likely to be the formation that he goes with for the start of the season.

The only difference here is that the Red Devils could add a defender in place of a winger, with Anthony Martial likely to miss out in place of Daley Blind or Chris Smalling.

It’s more defensive, but also far more fluid.

3-4-3

Antonio Conte made this formation famous last season, and whilst Mourinho has been utilising a two man strike force, he could opt for a formation that is proven in the Premier League.

In this case, perhaps Nemanja Matic could miss out, as his defensive superiority is less necessary in this setup. Once again, Anthony Martial could come back into an attack that looks to exploit the flanks.

Man Utd’s squad is more suited to utilising 3-5-2, but this formation has been proven to be successful in the Premier League.
