3 reasons why Chelsea should re-sign England star Ryan Bertrand

The decision for Chelsea to sell Ryan Bertrand to Southampton several years ago was a strange one. Despite impressing during his time down south, the club felt that he was surplus to requirements.

Since the departure of Ashley Cole the club have largely lacked a defensive left full back of his quality; which ironically is exactly what Ryan Bertrand was touted to become during his time with the Blues.

Fast forward several years and everything has changed for the young Englishman.

He finds himself in the England setup and is one of the first names on the team sheet for a hugely successful Southampton side.

Now it seems that Chelsea are looking to make up for their mistake, with reports linking the club with a move for the Englishman. Our landlord thinks the deal would be a great move for both clubs.

Left Back Woes

Cesar Azpilicueta

The simple fact of the matter is that since Ryan Bertrand left the club, Chelsea have simply failed to replace him. From his teen years he was touted as the eventual successor to Ashley Cole; but the club got rid of both players without having much of a back up plan.

Chelsea have struggled ever since this point, with Cesar Azplicueta largely filling in which is obviously not an ideal situation.

Signing Bertrand would give the club confidence that he could perform, offering a solidity down the left that Chelsea have lacked for years.

Homegrown

Due to his time within the Chelsea youth setup, Ryan Bertrand holds the invaluable status of being home grown.

At a time where English players at top European sides are one in a million, Ryan Bertrand would offer this status whilst also acting as a consistent first team performer.

You cant underestimate the importance of this fact; especially with John Terry likely leaving within the year and Gary Cahill’s performances often inconsistent.

Further to this, his home grown nature with the Blues also gives him an affinity to the club that he grew up at.

At a club where desire and support for the team is at a low point; Ryan Bertrand could offer a valued injection of passion.

Experience

Whilst he may still seem like a youngster to Chelsea fans, it is important to recognise that Bertrand is now 26 years old.

With that age comes experience, and the Englishman now has that in droves.

In addition to competing with his country at this summer’s European Championship, he has also picked up nearly 50 premier league appearances during his time with the Saints.

In addition to that, we cannot forget his Munich heroics in 2012, where he made his debut in the competition when Chelsea finally won the gold, meaning he has experience on a European level too.

His time in the Premier League also means that he would offer very little risk; Chelsea know he would perform well and there would be no transitional period for the full back.

Is there a better available left back in the world right now?
