The Man Utd fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have not enjoyed the best start to the season…

A crushing defeat against Chelsea on Sunday was, by far, Man Utd’s worst performance of the season – with Jose Mourinho’s men definitely outclassed by Antonio Conte’s group of hardworking players.

There has been some debate around the Tavern suggesting that the players are to blame, rather than Mourinho – but when things are tough; it is often the manager that pays the ultimate price.

Our landlord thinks that Mourinho is under pressure to start delivering this season, and his efforts so far have simply not been good enough.

He thinks that if it keeps going on like this – Mourinho could find himself out the door at Old Trafford.

With that said, here are THREE reasons why Mourinho’s job is on the line at Man United….

 Individual Performances

 

This is a huge issue for Mourinho, especially given how much money he spent during the summer.

A number of players were brought in for huge sums of money, including the likes of Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan – and all have failed to deliver.

What’s more, players already at the club, like Wayne Rooney, have seen their form drop under Mourinho; and this has contributed to a poor run of form from the Manchester giants.

Individual performances separate a good team from a great team – and whilst signings like N’Golo Kante are working wonders for Chelsea; Man Utd’s purchases are simply not good enough.

If Mourinho cannot get the best out of his big money signings – then somebody else will.

Form

Whilst you could argue that poor individual form is down to the players; you cannot dispute the fact that poor team performance is down to the manager.

Man Utd, in general, have been in poor form as of late.

The poor form of Paul Pogba has, of course, taken the headlines – but you cannot suggest that any single Man Utd player has had a good season so far.

All of Mourinho’s players have been poor – and that can only be down his poor tactical and managerial choices.

If Mourinho doesn’t pick up wins – he will be gone.

Demand for Success

Man Utd are the biggest club in the world. We’ve seen in recent years that if a manager does not achieve immediate success at Old Trafford, they will be out of the door.

We saw it with Louis van Gaal, and we saw it with David Moyes before that.

The Man Utd job has quickly become a revolving door simply because the Utd brass demand immediate success – and simply put, Mourinho is not delivering that.

If he wants to stay in charge long term – he will need success, and fast.
