Manchester City had been romping through their Premier League fixtures up until Spurs slightly ruined the party with a 2-0 win at White Hart Lane.
The City fans in the Transfer Tavern haven’t given up hope on the title though – they’re an optimistic bunch!
And following the defeat at Spurs, news quickly began to circulate that City’s main rivals Manchester United are being linked with a move for young Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo.
The 21-year-old Spaniard has quite a following in his native homeland and a lot has been predicted for the youngster, who has twice for the Spanish U21 team.
But we think he’d be a cracking signing for City, especially with the poor form that Aleksander Kolarov has been showing in recent weeks.
City need quality if they are to win titles and Grimaldo should turn out to be a real gem.
So with that in mind, here’s THREE reasons why Manchester City must beat Man United to the signing of Alex Grimaldo…
He’s one of the best prospects in world football
It’s a big claim, but we honestly think Grimaldo could turn into the next Jordi Alba. That has comparison has been frequently made in the Spanish press but it’s hard to ignore – Grimaldo has real quality.
He’s already featured nine times for Benfica this season, despite only moving to the club from Barcelona B earlier this summer.
He’s quick, direct and loves to get forward.
He would fit right in at the Etihad but like we said, they’ll need to beat United to his signature.
He’d work perfectly with Pep
If there’s anything we know about City boss Pep Guardiola is that he loves young players who are comfortable with the ball and going forward.
He pulled no punches in his pursuit of John Stones and the former Evertonian is already looking the part at the Etihad.
For Grimaldo to develop into a real talent, the leadership of Pep Guardiola really would be fantastic.
He’d be given the license to go forward whilst Pep would also hone his defending skills.
Let’s face it, Guardiola has worked with some of the best full-backs in the game, including Jordi Alba, who we mentioned earlier.
City need a new full-back
There’s little doubt that Aleksander Kolarov has been a real servant for City over the past few years but in the past few games, his downfalls have been ruthlessly exposed by the likes of Celtic and Spurs.
He’s solid enough but lacks that pace that really brings a Guardiola team together.
Gael Clichy is a fantastic option already at the club but Grimaldo would bring real competition for the place and definite quality too.
Sometimes you’ve got to replace good players with the best.
