Having signed from Crystal Palace for £1.2m, Southampton are set to earn a profit.
The reported sum for Fonte is around £8m, a remarkable fee for a player who recently turned 33.
He’s been a regular feature for the Saints this season, making 17 appearances in the Premier League alone, but at his age he is now replaceable.
Shane Long
Another player linked with an exit this month, and one who has mainly been used as a substitute this season, 29-year-old Shane Long should definitely consider an exit as he could be a first-choice striker for other Premier League sides.
The Ireland international needs regular opportunities for the benefit of his international career, especially with the World Cup just 18 months away, leaving Southampton after three years at the club is the right move.
Harrison Reed
A youngster with plenty of potential, Harrison Reed’s chances in the first-team have been extremely limited this season.
Now 21-years-old, he needs regular football and a temporary exit on-loan could be huge.
In three years with the Saints’ senior side, Reed has played 16 Premier League matches but is yet to earn first-team experience elsewhere. A loan move would be extremely beneficial and Reed should certainly consider his options.
