The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have been very impressed with the start that Alvaro Morata has made at Stamford Bridge. The Spaniard has made a seamless transition from Real Madrid, immediately impressing in the English top flight when called upon.
In truth, his excellent start to the campaign has made most fans forget about his predecessor – Diego Costa. Costa led the Chelsea attacking line for a number of years to great success, with the Spaniard winning two Premier League medals along the way. Bagging a plethora of goals and putting in a number of wonderful performances, there is no doubting that his tenure was a success.
Morata has certainly had some pretty big shoes to step in to, and it’ll take some beating if he wants to go down in history ahead of the likes of Costa. He’s certainly got the talent, but Costa achieved so much. Nothing is impossible though, and there are a few things that Morata can do in order to help his cause.
With that said, here are 3 things Morata still must do to prove he’s worth more to Chelsea than Costa…
Trophies
Diego Costa won a lot of trophies at Stamford Bridge, and Alvaro Morata will be expected to do the same.
The Blues won the Premier League title with Costa leading the line last term, and until Morata does the same, he won’t be considered good enough to take over Costa’s crown.
Players are defined by success, and success doesn’t come greater than in the form of silverware. This season Chelsea have a number of things to fight for, notably the FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League. Winning one of those would be a great start.
Consistency
Alvaro Morata has had a decent start to life at Stamford Bridge, but he needs to make sure that his fine form continues.
Diego Costa’s form would always be great before an inevitable drop off towards the end of the season really hurt his team. It’s all well and good firing for half of a campaign, but the last few months are arguably more important – and the Blues can’t afford to have a forward that doesn’t produce results all year round.
Morata will need to do just that if he wants to be a success.
Temperament
Diego Costa became famed for his aggression and anger, and on more than one occasion, that really cost the Blues.
Whether it led to suspensions or stoppages, Costa’s antics on the field were a problem for both Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, and that’s one aspect of his game that Chelsea won’t miss.
Alvaro Morata, then, needs to make sure that he doesn’t follow a similar path. He needs to conduct himself well on the pitch, and success will follow thereafter. That will separate him from Costa, whilst also making everything else much easier.
