Things are heating up here in the Transfer Tavern and it’s not just because Autumn is on its way!
This weekend sees the biggest game of the season so far take centre stage as Manchester United host Manchester City at Old Trafford, in a game that could give us some idea of who is going to be lifting the Premier League trophy in May.
You can feel the excitement building here in the Tavern as the two sets of fans try to unnerve the other with the usual jokes surrounding a derby.
The City fans go into the game knowing Sergio Aguero will be missing but are still confident in Pep Guardiola’s ability to think of a back-up plan, whilst the Red Devils faithful are itching for Jose Mourinho to show the whole division they are back as a serious force in England once more.
What will unfold on Saturday, no-one can be exactly sure of but our landlord reckons these THREE things should definitely be kept a close eye on by the huge global audience…
Jose Mourinho v Pep Guardiola
This one is a no brainer, you just have to look out for this on Saturday.
The two aren’t best friends that is for sure but there is certainly mutual respect for each other’s achievements.
Two of the best managers in the world renewing their rivalry this weekend looking to steal a march over the other in their latest shared title race, it’s a story-line that’s bound to promote drama.
The game could be a complete anti-climax but the antics in the dugout almost certainly won’t be – expect fireworks.
The midfield battle
All of a sudden this man above is key – no, really. Marouane Fellaini’s physicality against the slight and fleet footed David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne makes for an interesting battle.
If the big Belgian can get on top and impose himself City won’t be able to play but similarly if he can’t get near the Citizens metronomes, and they start pulling the strings he’ll becoming off with twisted blood and United leaving with a loss.
Differing full-back styles
The full back is such a hugely important position now in modern football and we’re in for an exhibition of contrasting styles this weekend.
Guardiola likes his full-backs to tuck in to central positions when attacking whilst Mourinho relies on his to give United width.
Which set does their job better could determine the result and it could just be how quickly each pair can react to the turnover of possession that seals the game.
For example, if United win the ball and get Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw forward quickly City could be exposed, but Guardiola’s sure to have a plan isn’t he? We can’t wait!
